Well after much discussion with the wife I have been allocated an area of the house that I can use for my figure collecting purposes. Now as some of you know I am very very new to figure collecting so I decided to create a small diary of my purchases, tomorrow I will take some pictures of the empty area of the house and get your input on how to display, hang figures etc.

This is the site but I will update this thread for advice and tips etc - I was even allowed to hang from the wall! Luckily I decided not to paint this area of the house yet.

This should be fun to follow!

Can't believe you scored those figures for $7, because that's what I would think they should cost to start with (i'm not a fan of the scale).

Regarding bendy plastic guns, we have ways of dealing with these things. Head on over to the custom forum!

Thanks for the heads up I will go over there and have a read, tomorrow I am going to empty that room and post some photos so everyone can see what i have to work with - I don't have many figures to fill it with but I am hoping that can be resolved shortly!  Grin

Hey SteelSpawn, so good you decided to go forward with your plan, this is going to be very fun, and this is the best place to share it.

Looks like you're off and running with a great bit of space!

As an idea for the walls, you can buy sheets of craftwood/MDF from home improvement places like Bunnings and they come in sheets of 8 x 4 feet. They have varying thicknesses too. A standard ceiling is eight feet high so you could buy a couple sheets, paint them white and screw them to the wall with four screws. Then you can trash it with pins, tape or anything you like and if down the track you move or whatever you simply unscrew the sheets and the original wall is unmarked save a couple screw holes?

As for your comments about it being the first thing you see when walking into the room, check out Andy's 'geek room gallery' as he has IKEA bookcases that have really nice doors on them. You close the doors to protect from kids and dust and when you want to display the contents it's easy enough.

Well this does sound like a nice project.  My first thought is I don’t like it being the first room you see coming into the house.  Too bad you could not use a spare bedroom down the hall.

I decided to modify my original post and make a new one called How To Display Action Figures and Collectibles .  There you will find my ideas for displays and I also included examples of other members displays too.

This thread deserves to be about Steelspawns Project and not mine.

Wow thanks FlaBat there is certainly a lot there to take in and was very usefull. The point you make about glass shelving is a very good one which i hadn't thought of before.

The only other option I have at this stage is holding off on the shevling until we decide to paint the room etc, then i might not worry about the walls and just get some very large glass shelving perhaps at that stage? That certainly is a great collection and a lot of inspiration can be taken from there

You might consider putting up the shelving BEFORE you paint.  That way you can mark the walls and drill the holes and put in the drywall anchors and see what the shelving looks like in place.  Sometimes, I’ve put up a shelf and realize that I should have put it someplace else or had it moved just a bit from where I put it.  Then you have a hole where you don’t want and you have to spackle and paint that spot.  So put them up see how they work for you then take them down and paint.

Good idea - well I think it will be another 12 months or so before I get painting so for the moment they are just going up on the wall however I am going to keep my eye out for various shelving and such along the way and then just put it aside for the moment.

Above all things don't rush to a decision, if your collection is still small and manageable (this will change very soon, even before you know it, mind you), use the furniture you have now, display it for a while, see how that works. Check sites like this, see what other people are doing in their geek rooms and of course, check the toy lines they are talking about.

In my case, I always decide first where a toy (or a line) is going to go in my house, before deciding to get it. And places like AFB with great pics and reviews helped me to decide (or forced me) to get lines like MOTU Classics.

And Flabat, I've seen pics of your collection a hundred times, but it's still overwhelming.

My collection has been an evolution over three years, and it took a long time to visualise what it could look like and how the room could be best used. FS' advice about not rushing is very important - it will probably go through several forms before it's complete.

It's only now that I feel happy with my room - and the limitations of size etc have helped me refine what I collect based on what I can display.

Best of luck - and we look forward to the results!!

Many years ago i built Custom Timber display Cabinets myself with Glass doors and it was pretty basic. It also made it easier as i mostly kept stuff MOC[my preference back then] so it was no real effort display-wise to get it all in.
I've had several years to plan my new displays when we finally get settled and mine are going to be mostly Diorama-Style for something different.I'll build the cabinets again myself but it's going to be a huge effort, like yourself it's going to take time but the planning and experimentation is half the fun i reckon.

Everyone's got great ideas here, loving this Thread you've started Ss!
